As screwcaps are all the rage for still wines, Domaine Chandon in California is following suit with the “crown cap” for its prestige cuvee Etoile. “Crown cap” is marketing speak for bottle cap. Sparkling wines spend much of their life under bottle cap in the winery, so its not exactly a huge leap or risk and you get the added comfort of knowing your special bottle doesn’t suffer from cork taint. The winery displays a “disgorging key” as the recommended tool to open your bubbly, but a regular old beer key will work too. Just promise me you won’t try to open it with your teeth.
