wine n candy showdown

Okie doke – here are the players:

Booze: Banfi Rosa Regale Brachetto d’Acqui 2005- Italy, Graham’s Six Grapes Porto (Ruby) – Portugal, Penfold’s Club Tawny
Port –
Australia

Candy: Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (standard size), Snicker’s (standard size), bulk milk chocolate covered raisins, bulk dark chocolate peanut clusters, Lindt dark chocolate squares.

After a highly scientific control group of me and my husband tried each candy with each wine, some surprising data emerged. While the staff at WGN will weigh in tomorrow, the standings are as thus so far. Candy with preferred wine by each participant:

Marc – Creative Director and Sporting Spouse

Reese’s – Banfi, Snicker’s – Banfi, Raisins-Graham’s, Nut Cluster – Banfi, Dark Chocolate – Graham’s.

Chris – Winediva and Halloween beverage scientist

Reese’s – Penfolds, Snicker’s – Banfi, Raisins – Graham’s, Nut Cluster – Banfi, Dark Chocolate – Graham’s

We essentially differ only on the peanut butter cup pairing. While I prefer the buttery notes that the tawny port highlights in the peanut butter, Marc prefers the salty accents that the Banfi accentuates and the lively bubbles that cut through the creamy filling.

Overall best match and total surprise – Banfi and Snickers. Seriously. Try it at home. Who knew milk chocolate, caramel, peanuts, and nougat could be made better by the addition of a sweet sparkling red from Italy. Trust me. It satisfies you.

Cannot wait to try the Snickers taste/drink test…I have been pairing DOVE Dark with many wines at home and love the chocolate/wine pairing. You cannot go wrong with chocolate!
